Baby Signs
Here at Curious Critters Daycare I do my best to communicate with our little ones as much as possible. One way that we are able to speak to each other is using simple and basic baby signs. By using baby signs your little ones are able to understand and expect certain parts of our daily routine. They are also now able to tell me when the are finished eating, need a drink of milk and even when they are hurt. These signs have been very helpful in easing the frustration little ones have when trying to communicate their needs.
Please keep in mind that when your little one makes a sign back to you it may not look as good as yours. For example if they use the sign for milk, sometimes they will just wiggle their fingers instead of squeezing.

All Done![]() For all-done we usually do the ASL sign for finished because it is a little simpler. You start with palms facing in, then turn the hands so that they are facing out.
Milk![]() The milk sign is a lot like milking a cow (or goat), but without the vertical motion – you are just squeezing the udder. You take both hands, make them into a fist, relax, and repeat.
More![]() To do the sign for more, flatten out your hands then bring your thumbs under to make an O shape. Then, bring your hands together and separate them repeatedly.
Hurt![]() To sign hurt, take your two hands and make each into a fist with your index finger extended. Point the index fingers of each hand at one another and twist the two hands back and forth. The sign is placed at the location of the hurt.

Drink![]() The sign for drink looks just like you are holding and drinking from an imaginary cup. To sign cup, make your hand into a c-shape as if holding a cup in your hand. Take your hand up to your mouth as if drinking from the cup.
Eat![]() Make the sign for eat by taking you strong hand, with the tip of your thumb touching the tips of your fingers and tapping it on your mouth.
Water![]() To sign water, take your strong hand, extending and separating the three middle fingers (the ASL sign for W). Tap your index finger on your chin.
Help![]() first begin by placing your hand in a flat handshape, palm facing up wards. This hand should rest slightly in the lower chest. Then, your dominant hand is going to be in a fist. Place the bottom part of your fist onto your palm of the other hand.
Now simply lift your flat hand, as if the palm is helping/lifting the other hand. |
